Sion, located at an altitude of 500 meters along the upper Rhone valley, is the capital of the canton of Valais. The old part of the city (vieille-ville) is made up of a perfectly preserved medieval village full of fine old buildings. The main tourist attractions include the Basilica de Valère – a fortified church dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries – and the Castle of Tourbillon (Château de Tourbillon), whose evocative ruins face the Basilica de Valère from a hill. The city is surrounded by four castles, those of Valère, Tourbillon, Majorie/Vidomat and Montorge. The Sion Christmas Market is the most important event that takes place in the city during Christmas.
