Mannheim, after Stuttgart, is the second largest city in Baden-Württemberg, home to a famous university. The city is located in a flat area at the confluence of the Rhine and the Neckar. A small village until the beginning of the 17th century, Mannheim began to develop after the construction of the Friedrichsburg fortress (1606).
