Marburg an der Lahn Christmas Market

Marburg (Marburg an der Lahn) is a beautiful historic town in Hesse, located along the River Lahn, about 100 km north of Frankfurt am Main. The city developed in the Middle Ages at the crossroads of two important communication routes, the one with Italy and the Alps and the one between Cologne and Prague. Between the 13th and 16th centuries the city was one of the capitals of Hesse. A land of fervent Protestants, the oldest Protestant university in the world was founded here in 1527.

Marburg, today has a beautiful old town, known for its Gothic architecture and its castle. Marburg Castle (Marburger Schloss) is a beautiful example of medieval architecture, it dates back to the 11th century, the Elisabethkirche is also worth a visit, a rare example of a pure Gothic style church north of the Alps, but the entire historic center has valuable buildings. The city is still today an important university site.

1) Marburg Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt Marburg). The market usually takes place in the historic center of Marburg in front of the church of St. Elisabeth (Elisabethkirche) and in the Marktplatz. In the stands of the Christmas market you will find wickerwork, ceramics, toys, hot drinks, sweets and local dishes. A large Christmas pyramid, numerous Christmas trees, carols, music, Christmas carols and rich illumination usually make Marburg a real Christmas town.

ATTENTION: We recommend that you check the opening of the Christmas markets with the organizers.
