Cheshire is a county of England’s north-west. The county is bordered to the north by Merseyside and Greater Manchester, to the east by Derbyshire, to the south-east by Staffordshire, to the south by Shropshire and to the east by the Welsh districts of Flintshire and Wrexham. The county faces north-west on the Irish Sea via the wide estuaries of the rivers Dee and Mersey, which are separated by the Wirral Peninsula. Only the southern part of the Wirral Peninsula is part of the county. The territory is mostly flat. The main rivers are the Dee, the Weaver and the Mersey. At the eastern border rise the hills of the Western Pennines. The seat of the county is the historic city of Chester, founded by the Romans. The north part of the county lies in the metropolitan areas of Liverpool and Manchester. The largest city is Warrington. For the British people Christmas it is one of the most important holidays of the year. The Christmas markets are a rather recent tradition imported from Germany.
