Düsseldorf, capital of the land of North Rhine-Westphalia, is an important city in Germany, located along the Rhine River, 30 km north of Cologne, renowned for its trade and fashion fairs. The city was for centuries the seat of the Dukes of Berg, who controlled it since the 12th century, making it the capital of the duchy at the end of the 14th century, enriching it with numerous palaces and monuments. At the beginning of the 17th century, with the extinction of the ducal dynasty, Düsseldorf became part of the Palatinate-Neuburg, this too was a flourishing period for the city which continued to beautify itself, being the main seat of the Prince Elector. Düsseldorf has a beautiful historic district full of life and clubs, and what is considered the richest shopping street in Germany, the Königsallee.

DÜSSELDORF CHRISTMAS MARKET

The Düsseldorf Christmas Market (Düsseldorfer Weihnachtsmarkt) is usually made up of six distinct markets located in six different squares and streets of the characteristic old city, for a total of over 250 wooden chalets.

1) Weihnachtsmarkt am Marktplatz. This market is located in the main square of the historic center, where the Renaissance town hall of Düsseldorf overlooks. The market is filled with stalls of artisans displaying their one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

2) “Engelchenmarkt” auf dem Heinrich-Heine-Platz. This is the so-called Angels Market, located in front of an art nouveau masterpiece, the music pavilion (Musikpavillon), the market offers, among other things, many German gastronomic products. In this square there is also the traditional pyramid of mulled wine.

3) Weihnachtsmarkt auf der Flinger Straße. Beautiful market made up of stalls whose shape recalls that of the facades of the houses in the historic center of Düsseldorf.

4) “Sternchenmarkt” am Stadtbrückchen. Market located inside the courtyard of the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus, in a fairytale atmosphere.

5) Weihnachtsmarkt am Schadowplatz. In the stalls of this market you will find sweets and typical Christmas products.

6) Weihnachtsmarkt am Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz. This is the market held in the square where the ice skating rink is located.

In addition to the markets in the old city, don’t miss a visit to the glittering shops of the Königsallee, the shopping street par excellence in Germany. During Advent, Düsseldorf also has a large ice rink set up in Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz.
